A few weeks ago I tweeted out that I hated a quiet library. I did not ever imagine the positive response I would get from that tweet.
A school library should never be quiet! I don't care if the kids are 4 or 18. A library is a place for learning, collaborating, exploring and fun. Kids are forced to be quiet all day in class so when they come to the library they should be able to talk!
Students should be able to relax and enjoy themselves. The library should not be a place where kids can't feel comfortable being kids.
One of the first things I tell my 6th graders, when they walk into the library is that I don't run a quiet library. I am not quiet so I don't expect you to be either. I expect you to be respectful and behave correctly but I don't expect you to be quiet!
When teachers walk into my library they often comment on how loud it is. I actually take it as a compliment. To me noise = learning while silence = obedience.
Be proud to be loud! Make your library a place kids don't ever want to leave instead of a place they are afraid to go.
I am always looking for new ways to be loud in the library. What are you doing?
